Inspired by "Top Gun" and model aircraft, flying was a childhood dream of mine. After a 20-year career as an inertial navigation specialist on a nuclear submarine, I retired and decided to leave it all behind to retrain at Helicraft and become a professional helicopter pilot. An incredible adventure began here, and I wouldn’t trade the sound of sonar for the melody of a turbine starting up or the sound of the blades “clapping” through the air for anything in the world…
I could say my first flight with passengers or the frozen rivers of Quebec. But I think many pilots remember that moment when their instructor steps out of the plane, gives them a thumbs-up, and lets them fly solo for the first time. A little nervousness, a lot of excitement—but in any case, a truly memorable moment in a pilot’s career.
